![]() I can live with that though, as most of my workflow is in Markdown format, so vim and VS Code are my main tools. For word processing, Libreoffice is the gold standard, but yeah, it's not as capable as Office. I do mostly vector graphics these days and Inkscape is great for this. You may already be aware, but many Steam games have native Linux binaries and I do recommend trying those first before enabling Proton.įor apps, Inkscape and GIMP are my preferred graphic editors. ![]() Nearly all of my games have performed the same or better under Linux (6800XT, playing I do use Proton GE (Glorious Eggroll), which may be contributing to the performance. I'm surprised to hear about the performance drop though, especially considering your AMD GPU. ![]() I don't play Skyrim, so unfortunately cannot offer any advice there. I used to dual-boot Windows and Arch/Debian, (mostly for gaming), but earlier this year I committed to Linux completely and for the most part things have been great. I'm a long-time Linux user with a webdev and sysadmin background too. Nobara is a distro based on Fedora that has lots of gaming-related patches baked in, you might want to look into that as well.Īs for the productivity, office related stuff, here are some of my recommendations:įor best compatibility with MS stuff, I recommend OnlyOffice, I use it reliably for a long time, you basically need 0 time to getting accustomed to OnlyOffice coming from MS Office if you don't use advanced macro-scripting stuff.įor graphic design, you can use GIMP, Figma, Inkscape, it depends on what your use case is - but there is no Adobe clone out there, so you will need to adjust to a different workflow. ![]() I switched from Windows almost one year ago, but here are some findings related to gaming on Linux:įeral Gamemode has a very big impact on FPS on some systems (my PC would get 10-15 FPS just from that, doesn't seem to do much on my Laptop, though, and it's easy to enable it system-wide from Lutris, just go to Configure Wine -> System options -> Enable Feral GameMode)īottles might have a more intuitive UI for third-party games and apps like Vortex Mod Manager (Lutris does have an installer script for it, have you tried that first?) What other open source software is really good for stuff like word processing or Graphic Design? I know Adobe doesn't work on linux (yet)Īny responses are greatly appreciated and I do apologise if I'm just being a wally! Is gaming almost as good as windows is now? I know the steam deck vastly improved Linux Gaming with Proton. I guess what I'm asking for is some opinions from you guys who use fedora day to day. I'm fed up with Win11, I hate how they put more emphasis on a MS Account and it's even more data grabbing than Win10 (an OS I LOVE). I play Skyrim a lot and not being able to use mods is not an option for me now, so any recommendations on how to do this would be appreciated! It would install and launch, I turned off auto updates as per the installer and turned off wifi, then closed and reconnected wifi, but it just wouldn't load back.) (On a side note, I could not for the life of me get Vortex Mod Manager to work through Lutris for me. I am pretty tech savvy, I work as an IT Engineer professionally and I do web development in my spare time, but I'm still pretty new to Linux and was not sure if I was doing something wrong, or this is just how it is on Linux. Now, this is to be expected, I have an RX 6700 XT and a Ryzen 5 5600X, however, on most of the games I downloaded, I was seeing at least a 10% drop in FPS. However, a couple of days ago, I actually went all the way and installed it over my WIn11 SSD.Īt first, it was working fine, however, gaming was not as good as Windows. I've been running Fedora on a VM for a while and I really like the smoothness and ease of use of it. I've been questioning for a couple of days whether or not to go from Win11 to Fedora.
